Makura-gaeshi from the Kyōka Hyaku-Monogatari, c. 1853
The Makura-gaeshi is a trickster spirit notorious for moving pillows while people sleep. Some sources say they also sprinkle sand in the eyes and steal souls. Stories do not specify how far the pillows are moved, some sources claim that they move pillows all the way to the foot of the bed while the victim is peacefully asleep. The creature is invisible to adults and can only be seen by children.
